comically known as "Why can't I hold all these promises?"

My final project for this semester's sculpture class, the assignment was to make something with rubber mold and welded components that falls under the postmodernist umbrella.

This work is a comment on uselessness. Specifically, the bullets represent empty promises. What are you supposed to do with all these empty promises? I've put them in a basket, which renders the basket useless, too. What's the point of a basket if it's only holding useless objects?

My hope in choosing to use bullets is to evoke a response in the viewer. Even if you don't get the concept of empty promises, hopefully seeing the bullets brings out some kind of response (an opinion on hunting, war, mass production, etc).

It represents empty promises very loosely by following the track of thinking concerning politics, war, budgets and the utter uselessness of it all. It's not an important concept when it comes to appreciating the piece, though, because it also aims to be innocuous and unmemorable. Bullets were also chosen because they're something that hopefully will evoke some sort of reaction, feeling or opinion about their worth.

Thanks for your visit :)

ahhh i see

yeah that's what i was thinking, bullets have many definitions for people depending on how they were raised, culture, religion, and other things so it works well ;)

I hope your critique goes well on this piece, I found it very powerful. Nice work on the basket. What gauge steel did you use? That wasn't easy to pull off but looks effortless.

Thank you! The crit went well, the entire class had marvelous work. I'm not sure what gauge it was, I just used whatever was handy and most appropriate in the welding shop. The woven parts are sheet metal so it wasn't all that difficult to bend around the posts.
